RESUMO

The industrial byproduct gypsum is a general term for byproducts discharged from industrial production with calcium sulfate as the main ingredient. Due to the high number of impurities and production volume, the industrial byproduct gypsum is underutilized, leading to serious environmental problems. At present, only desulfurization gypsum and phosphogypsum have been partially utilized in cementitious materials, cement retarders, etc., while the prospects for the utilization of other byproduct gypsums remain worrying. This paper mainly focuses on the sources and physicochemical properties of various types of gypsum byproducts and summarizes the application scenarios of various gypsums in construction materials. Finally, some suggestions are proposed to solve the problem of the industrial byproduct gypsum. This review is informative for solving the environmental problems caused by gypsum accumulation.

RESUMO

Catalytic thermal treatment is an efficient and low-energy consumption method for degrading polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) in municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MSWIFA). However, catalysts with high activity are expensive, difficult to separate and reuse from the treated MSWIFA, and they usually pose a risk of heavy metal pollution. Herein, a synergistic thermal treatment method of MSWIFA and electrolytic manganese residue (EMR) at relatively low temperatures was proposed after an in-depth analysis of their mineralogy composition to achieve detoxification of PCDD/Fs in MSWIFA. The mass and WHO-TEQ degradation efficiencies of PCDD/Fs significantly increased from -92.79% and -51.46%-98.57% and 96.10%, respectively, by the addition of electrolytic manganese residue (EMR) with an MSWIFA/EMR ratio of 3:7 in the thermal treatment of MSWIFA at 250 °C for 60 min. The WHO-TEQ concentration of PCDD/Fs in the treated sample decreased to 3.7 ng WHO-TEQ/kg, meeting the European end-of-waste criteria (20 ng WHO-TEQ/kg). The excellent degradation effect of EMR on PCDD/Fs in MSWIFA could be attributed to two aspects: 1) the manganese oxides in EMR has a catalytic effect on the degradation of PCDD/Fs; 2) the NH3 generated by the decomposition of (NH4)2SO4 in EMR is conducive to the degradation and resynthesis inhibition of PCDD/Fs. Besides, the thermodynamic calculations indicated that CaClOH in MSWIFA played a crucial role in the decomposition of (NH4)2SO4 in EMR. In addition, the degradation pathways and mechanisms of PCDD/Fs-homologues under the synergistic effect of manganese oxides, ammonia, and thermal field were investigated through comparative analysis of concentration and fingerprint of PCDD/Fs.

RESUMO

The increasing use of chiral pharmaceuticals has led to their widespread presence in the environment. However, their toxicokinetics have rarely been reported. Therefore, the tissue-specific uptake and depuration kinetics of two pairs of pharmaceutical enantiomers, S-(-)-metoprolol versus R-(+)-metoprolol and S-(+)-venlafaxine versus R-(-)-venlafaxine, were studied in marine medaka (Oryzias melastigma) during a 28-day exposure and 14-day clearance period. The toxicokinetics of the studied pharmaceuticals, including uptake and depuration rate constants, depuration half-life (t1/2), and bioconcentration factor (BCF), were reported for the first time. The whole-fish results demonstrated a higher S- than R-venlafaxine bioaccumulation potential, whereas no significant difference was observed between S- and R-metoprolol. O-desmethyl-metoprolol (ODM) and α-hydroxy-metoprolol (AHM) were the main metoprolol metabolites identified by suspect screening, and the ratios of ODM to AHM were 3.08 and 1.35 for S- and R-metoprolol, respectively. N,O-Didesmethyl-venlafaxine (NODDV) and N-desmethyl-venlafaxine (NDV) were the main venlafaxine metabolites, and the ratios of NODDV to NDV were 1.55 and 0.73 for S- and R-venlafaxine, respectively. The highest tissue-specific BCFs of the four enantiomers were all found in the eyes, meriting in-depth investigation.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: Using brightness mode ultrasound combined with shear wave elastography, this study aims to detect structural and functional changes of the medial head of gastrocnemius (MG) in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients with or without diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN). METHODS: 149 T2DM patients (DPN group and non-DPN group) and 60 healthy volunteers (control group) were enrolled. We measured the absolute difference of fascicle length (FL), pennation angle (PA), and shear wave velocity (SWV) of both MG in neutral position and maximal ankle joint's plantar flexion and calculated ΔFL, ΔPA, and ΔSWV. These three parameters, along with muscle thickness (MT), were compared among the three groups. RESULTS: In the DPN group, the MG's MT, ΔPA, and ΔSWV were significantly lower than in the non-DPN group (p < 0.01); these parameters achieved the highest scores in the control group (p < 0.01). The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve of the combination of ΔSWV and ΔFL was the largest for predicting inpatients with or without DPN. CONCLUSIONS: Decreased muscle mass (MT) and muscle contractibility (ΔFL and ΔSWV) were detected in patients with T2DM, with or without DPN. ΔSWV and ΔFL of the MG showed high-diagnostic accuracy for DPN warning signs.

RESUMO

The m6A methylation is the most numerous modification of mRNA in mammals, coordinated by RNA m6A methyltransferases, RNA m6A demethylases, and RNA m6A binding proteins. They change the RNA m6A methylation level in their specific manner. RNA m6A modification has a significant impact on lipid metabolic regulation. The "writer" METTL3/METTL14 and the "eraser" FTO can promote the accumulation of lipids in various cells by affecting the decomposition and synthesis of lipids. The "reader" YTHDF recognizes m6A methylation sites of RNA and regulates the target genes' translation. Due to this function that regulates lipid metabolism, RNA m6A methylation plays a pivotal role in metabolic diseases and makes it a great potential target for therapy.

RESUMO

Restrictions on legacy per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) have led to the widespread use of emerging PFASs. However, their toxicokinetics have rarely been reported. Here, tissue-specific uptake and depuration kinetics of perfluoroethylcyclohexanesulfonate (PFECHS) and 6:2 and 8:2 chlorinated polyfluoroalkyl ether sulfonates (Cl-PFESAs) were studied in marine medaka (Oryzias melastigma). The fish were exposed to these substances for 28 days (0.2 µg/L), followed by a clearance period of 14 days. The depuration constant (kd) of PFECHS [0.103 ± 0.009 day-1 (mean ± standard deviation)] was reported for the first time. Among the six studied tissues, the highest concentrations of 6:2 Cl-PFESA, 8:2 Cl-PFESA, and PFECHS were found in the liver [1540, 1230, and 188 ng (g of wet weight)-1, respectively] on day 28 while the longest residence times were found in the eyes (t1/2 values of 21.7 ± 4.3, 23.9 ± 1.5, and 17.3 ± 0.8 days, respectively). No significant positive correlation was found between the bioconcentration factors of the studied PFASs and the phospholipid or protein contents in different tissues of the studied fish. Potential metabolites of Cl-PFESAs, i.e., their hydrogen-substituted analogues (H-PFESAs), were identified by time-of-flight mass spectrometry. However, the biotransformation rates were low (<0.19%), indicating the poor capacity of marine medaka to metabolize Cl-PFESAs to H-PFESAs.

RESUMO

A total of 40 juveniles belonging to a temperate deepwater gnomefish species, Scombrops boops, were sampled from littoral habitats (2-5 m depth) of eastern Hong Kong waters in April and May 2017 and March 2019. The presence of gnomefish juveniles in subtropical southern China is reported for the first time at a record low latitude of 22°11'-22°21'N. The specimens were identified based on the COI gene sequence. The genetic composition between Japan and Hong Kong gnomefish populations were compared by sequencing the mitochondrial Cytb gene, which showed no genetic differentiation. The juveniles ranged from 3.5-10.1 cm (n = 40) in total length, with 35 individuals caught from Sargassum beds and five from rocky reefs. Our findings highlighted that the littoral habitats in Hong Kong waters, in particular the seasonal Sargassum beds, are important for small juveniles of S. boops.

RESUMO

This study presented evaluation of a concrete damage process by the acoustic emission (AE) technique under uniaxial multi-step compressive loading procedure combined with digital image correlation (DIC). The results showed that AE elastic wave velocity had good stress dependence in the damage process of concrete specimens with different sizes (cube, prism) and coarse aggregate characteristics (volume fraction, maximum size), and the effects of specimen sizes and coarse aggregate characteristics on the stress dependence can be nearly neglected. The standard deviation of 32 AE elastic wave velocities was used as the criterion to evaluate the relative stress ratio of concrete under different damage states, and the damage process of concrete was divided into three damage stages according to this criterion. When the standard deviation is below 70, in the range of 70 to 1700, and greater than 1700, the concrete damage process is defined as steady damage process, accelerated damage process and buckling damage process, respectively. The accuracy of the presented evaluation methodology was demonstrated by comparative results with digital image correlation. The results indicate that the standard deviation of AE elastic wave velocities can potentially serve as a reliable, convenient, and non-destructive evaluation criterion of concrete damage state under uniaxial compressive loading.

RESUMO

As the concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere keeps increasing, the development of a highly efficient CO2 absorbent is highly desired. In this work, a binary mixture system of polyethylene glycol 200 (PEG 200) (1) + 3-dimethylamino-propylamine (DMAPA) (2) was used for CO2 absorption. Considering the importance of thermophysical properties to binary solutions, the densities and viscosities of the PEG 200 (1) + DMAPA (2) mixture were measured at T = (298.15, 303.15, 308.15, 313.15, and 318.15) K and atmospheric pressure over the entire composition range. Based on the density and viscosity data, the excess properties and viscous flow thermodynamic parameters were calculated, respectively. To obtain the coefficients and to estimate the standard deviations between the experimental and calculated quantities, the excess molar volume (V m E), the viscosity deviation (Δη), and the excess Gibbs free energies of activation for viscous flow (ΔG* E) were fitted to the Redlich-Kister equation. Furthermore, based on the results of UV-vis, FTIR, and 1H NMR spectra, the intermolecular interaction of PEG 200 and DMAPA was discussed. Particularly, a strong intermolecular bonding is formed when the molar ratio of PEG 200 to DMAPA is about 1:2 because of the excess molar volume (V m E). On that account, a mixture of PEG 200 and DMAPA in a ratio of 1:2 was used for studying CO2 absorption, and a CO2 absorption of about 0.19 g per gram of absorbent was achieved at room temperature and atmosphere.

RESUMO

Coolia tropicalis is a species of benthic and epiphytic toxic algae, which can produce phycotoxins that intoxicate marine fauna. In this study, the potential toxic effects of C. tropicalis on fish were investigated using larval marine medaka (Oryzias melastigma) as a model to evaluate fish behavior, physiological performance, and stress-induced molecular responses to exposure to two sublethal concentrations (LC10 and LC20) of hydrophilic algal lysates. Exposure to C. tropicalis lysates inhibited swimming activity, activated spontaneous undirected locomotion, altered nerve length ration, and induced early development abnormalities, such as shorter eye diameter, body as well as axon length. Consistent with these abnormalities, changes in the expression of genes associated with apoptosis (CASPASE-3 and BCL-2), the inflammatory response (IL-1ß and COX-2), oxidative stress (SOD), and energy metabolism (ACHE and VHA), were also observed. This study advances our understanding of the mechanisms of C. tropicalis toxicity in marine fish in the early life stages and contributes to future ecological risk assessments of toxic benthic dinoflagellates.

RESUMO

In this paper, we used a convolutional neural network to study the classification of marine microalgae by using low-resolution Mueller matrix images. Mueller matrix images of 12 species of algae from 5 families were measured by a Mueller matrix microscopy with an LED light source at 514 nm wavelength. The data sets of seven resolution levels were generated by the bicubic interpolation algorithm. We conducted two groups of classification experiments; one group classified the algae into 12 classes according to species category, and the other group classified the algae into 5 classes according to family category. In each group of classification experiments, we compared the classification results of the Mueller matrix images with those of the first element (M11) images. The classification accuracy of Mueller matrix images declines gently with the decrease of image resolution, while the accuracy of M11 images declines sharply. The classification accuracy of Mueller matrix images is higher than that of M11 images at each resolution level. At the lowest resolution level, the accuracy of 12-class classification and 5-class classification of full Mueller matrix images is 29.89% and 35.83% higher than those of M11 images, respectively. In addition, we also found that the polarization information of different species had different contributions to the classification. These results show that the polarization information can greatly improve the classification accuracy of low-resolution microalgal images.

RESUMO

Coolia malayensis is one of the commonly found benthic dinoflagellates in Hong Kong which can produce biotoxins and threaten the early life stages of marine invertebrates. Seawater temperature has been recognized as one of the primary environmental factors that affect the formation of harmful algal blooms. The present study evaluated the responses of C. malayensis, including growth, toxicity and toxin content (putative analogues of okadaic acid and azaspiracids), after exposure to a range of seven different temperatures (i.e., 16°C, 18°C, 20°C, 22°C, 24°C, 26°C, and 28°C). The highest algal density and specific growth rate were recorded at 24°C. Significantly higher Fv/Fm (maximum quantum yield of PSII) and total phaeo-pigment values were observed in the exponential growth phase at 28°C. The toxicity of the algal extract, which was assessed by the lethality rate of Artemia larvae, increased with temperature. The highest toxin content was detected at the second highest temperature treatment, i.e., 26°C. Overall, temperature had significant effects on the physiological activities and toxicity of C. malayensis. This study has raised attention to the potentially increasing risks posed by toxic benthic dinoflagellates during heat waves in coastal waters.

RESUMO

Benthic dinoflagellates produce a diverse range of phycotoxins, which are responsible for intoxication events in marine fauna. This study assessed the hemolysis associated toxicities of six species of benthic dinoflagellates from the genera Coolia, Fukuyoa, Amphidinium and Prorocentrum. Results demonstrated that Amphidinium carterae, Coolia tropicalis and Fukuyoa ruetzleri were the three most toxic species, while Prorocentrum cf. lima did not have significant hemolytic effect. Grouper samples (Cephalopholis boenak) were more tolerant to the hemolytic algae than the blackhead seabream (Acanthopagrus schlegelii), with decreased heart rate and blood flow being observed in medaka larvae after exposure to toxic algal extracts. LC-MS/MS analysis detected a gambierone analogue called 44-methylgambierone produced by the C. tropicalis isolate. This analogue was also detected in the F. ruetzleri isolate. This study provided new information on the hemolysis associated toxicities of local toxic benthic dinoflagellates, which contributes to better understanding of their emerging threats to marine fauna and reef systems in Hong Kong.

RESUMO

Ciguatoxins are produced by toxic benthic dinoflagellates and cause ciguatera fish poisoning worldwide, but the toxic effects on developing marine fish have not been well investigated. The Pacific ciguatoxin (P-CTX-1), is a potent sodium channel agonist, which is one of the most toxic members among all CTXs. This study evaluated the toxic effects of microinjecting purified Pacific ciguatoxin-1 (P-CTX-1) on embryonic development of marine medaka Oryzias melastigma. A lower 96h-LD50 value was estimated for eleuthero-embryos (1.32ngg-1) than that for embryos (1.71ngg-1), indicating that P-CTX-1 is more lethal to newly hatched medaka larvae. P-CTX-1 induced detrimental effects during embryonic development, including hatching failure, abnormalities in physical development (caudal fin malformation and spinal deformities), internal damage (green coloration of the gall bladder and hemorrhaging), immune dysfunction, and altered muscle physiology (bradycardia and hyperkinetic twitching). The results of a transcriptional expression analysis of genes related to the stress/immune responses, cardiac and bone development, and apoptosis supported the observed developmental abnormalities. This study advanced the understanding of P-CTX-1 mediated toxic mechanisms in the development of early life stages of a fish, and thus contributed to the toxicity assessment of CTXs in marine ecosystems.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To identify and compare the factors affecting the knowledge of, attitude towards and use of antibiotics between urban and rural residents in China. METHODS: A total of 3631 urban and rural residents in Heilongjiang Province, China, were selected using random sampling. Questionnaires recorded demographic characteristics and participant knowledge of, attitude towards and use of antibiotics. The responses of rural and urban residents were compared, and logistic regression analysis was applied to identify the factors that may contribute to the knowledge of, attitude towards and use of antibiotics. RESULTS: The majority of the participants (>60%) were aware that antibiotics could be used to treat bacterial infections and that bacteria could be resistant to antibiotics. However, only roughly half (40-60%) of the participants were aware that bacterial resistance to antibiotics had become a problem in China. Urban participants reported a more adequate knowledge of, attitude towards and use of antibiotics than rural participants. Logistic regression analysis indicated that urban residency, female gender and level of education were associated with knowledge of, attitude towards and use of antibiotics. CONCLUSIONS: Within our sample in Heilongjiang Province, the knowledge of, attitude towards and use of antibiotics were suboptimal in roughly half of all urban and rural residents, but better in urban than in rural residents. Targeted interventions to educate rural residents in particular may reduce the misuse of antibiotics.

RESUMO

The objective of this study was to compare quinolone resistance and gyrA mutations in clinical isolates of Klebsiella pneumoniae and Escherichia coli from Chinese adults who used quinolone in the preceding month and children without any known history of quinolone administration. The antimicrobial susceptibilities of 61 isolates from children and 79 isolates from adults were determined. The mutations in the quinolone resistance-determining regions in gyrA gene were detected by PCR and DNA sequencing. Fluoroquinolone resistance and types of gyrA mutations in isolates from children and adults were compared and statistically analyzed. No significant differences were detected in the resistance rates of ciprofloxacin and levofloxacin between children and adults among isolates of the two species (all P > 0.05). The double mutation Ser83→Leu + Asp87→Asn in the ciprofloxacin-resistant isolates occurred in 73.7% isolates from the children and 67.9% from the adults, respectively (P = 0.5444). Children with no known history of quinolone administration were found to carry fluoroquinolone-resistant Enterobacteriaceae isolates. The occurrence of ciprofloxacin resistance and the major types of gyrA mutations in the isolates from the children were similar to those from adults. The results indicate that precautions should be taken on environmental issues resulting from widespread transmission of quinolone resistance.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Recently, many scientists including bacteriologists have begun to focus on social aspects of antibiotic management especially the knowledge, attitude and practice (KAP) among the general population regarding antibiotic use. However, relatively few works have published on the relationship between KAP and medical education. In this study, we analyze the present status of Chinese medical (MS)- and non-medical (NS) students' KAP on the use of antibiotics, and examine the influence of Chinese medical curriculum on the appropriate usage of antibiotics among medical students. METHODS: In this study, 2500 students from 3 universities (including one medical university) in Northeastern China participate in the questionnaire survey on students' knowledge, attitude and practice toward antibiotic usage. Wilcoxon rank sum test and Chi square test were used to analyze questionnaire-related discrete and categorical variables respectively, in order to assess the impact of the medical curriculum on students' KAP towards antibiotics. RESULTS: 2088 (83.5%) respondents (MS-1236 and NS-852) were considered valid for analysis. The level of knowledge of MS on the proper use of antibiotics was significantly higher than that of NS (p < 0.0001). However, based on their responses on actual practice, MS were found to rely on antibiotics more than NS (p < 0.0001). Moreover, the knowledge and attitude of MS towards antibiotic use improved with the increase in grade with discriminate use of antibiotics concurrently escalating during the same period. CONCLUSIONS: This study indicates that Chinese medical curriculum significantly improves students' knowledge on antibiotics and raises their attention on antibiotic resistance that may result from indiscriminate use of antibiotics. The study also shows an excessive use of antibiotics especially among the more senior medical students, signifying a deficiency of antibiotics usage instruction in their curriculum. This might explain why there are frequent abuses of antibiotics in both hospital and community settings from a certain angle.
